YOKAI are supernatural creatures, spirits, and animals with magical powers in Japanese folklore whose mysterious existence has continued to completely horrify, enchant, and save humankind. In the Edo period, many Japanese artists gave yokai their shapes by taking hints from the folklore tales and mixing that with their imagination. In this day and age, interest in yokai has increased explosively worldwide through the spread of Japanese pop culture, and also, as humankind are faced with all kinds of crisis that seem insolvable on their own.Â

SHIGERU MIZUKI (1922â2015) was the father of Japanese manga, and one of Japanâs most respected artists. A creative prodigy, he lost an arm in World War II but vigorously pursued the art of manga. He introduced the yokai genre to the world of manga with GeGeGe no Kitaro, his most famous character. His yokai works are a "bricolage" based on the historical yokai culture of Japan. A real-life yokai hunter, Mizuki traveled to over sixty countries to engage in fieldwork based on spirit folklore. In March, 2022,  a retrospective commemorating the centennial of Shigeru Mizukiâs birth was held at a museum in Angouleme, France.
